KIDS Health Expo!

Posted on August 29th, 2011 in Uncategorized

KIDS Health Expo is a premier event for the city of Plattsmouth that focuses on the Mind, Body and Spirit of children age 0-18.  KIDS Expo will provide families in the community with perspective, advice, and comfort about a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioral issues that affect children and teens.

Professionals from all fields of health and safety will be invited to participate as exhibitors and educators, ranging from mental health, pediatric health care, chiropractic, nutrition, sports and athletics, prevention and wellness. Families and children who attend the expo will gain perspective on how to incorporate physical activity and healthy nutrition habits into everyday routines, as well as the importance of preventative healthcare. Parents will learn how to keep their kids and teens eating healthy and active while learning healthy and safety habits for their entire family. Community professionals will provide unbiased, reliable information to help families pursue good health and wellness for a lifetime.

KIDS Health Expo will be held on October 15, 2011, in correlation with National Children’s Health Month. Since 1992, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has designated October as Child Health Month to increase public awareness of the value of preventive health care for children.

In support of CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines and goals for Children’s Health Month, KIDS Expo will focus on the following key points for children and parents.

Children will be exposed to the importance of:1) hand washing to prevent illness and infections; 2) nutrition and eating breakfast before going to school; 3) not smoking and avoiding the smoke of others; and 4) exercise and play safety and appropriate use of protective gear.

Parents will be supported and provided resources for 1) reading to and becoming actively involved with their children; 2) getting their children vaccinated; 3) getting their children health-care insurance; 4) checking for health hazards in their home and eliminating them; 5) importance of car safety and proper car safety restraints; 6) seeking medical advice if their child is slow to learn; and 7) avoidance of tobacco use and limiting alcohol use. In addition, women of childbearing age will learn the importance of taking vitamins with folic acid to prevent certain birth defects.

CDC also estimates that 1 in 6 U.S. children between 2 and 19 is overweight, therefore posing a risk factor for serious health consequences including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. KIDS Expo will provide many resources and opportunities for children and families to learn about preventing obesity. Children will also be able to participate in hands-on activities encouraging and engaging them to be active.
